The First Day of Spring Brings.....
.....THE EASTER BUNNY!
Every year for the past few years the Easter bunny has paid us a visit on the first day of spring....instead of Easter Sunday.
The reasons the rabbit decided to do this did not necessarily start out being super-spiritual or anything. He just got tired of trying to get all the eggs gathered and hidden and gifts of chocolate and stuff doled out AND try to make it to church on time. Without swearing.
So 3 years ago Mr. Easter Bunny surprised us all on the first day of spring and hid a bunch of eggs and candy and left some gifts and we spent the whole entire day goofing off with our easter bunny stuff. It was fun.
And that did not stiffle the easter spirit in our house at all. It just shifted. We were all able to have fun with all the things of easter and free to turn all of our focus on the true meaning of easter. One of the things that helped us do that was a gift from the rabbit himself. They are called "Resurection Eggs". You've got to check those out.
Sometimes it's hard being a Christian mom in this culture. A culture that acts like the true meaning of this season is secondary to the commercial aspect of it. I know of some parents who totally do away with bunnies and santas and all of that. I've decided to use it and not kill it. In regards to the commercial aspect and the real meaning....it really is possible to enjoy one and embrace the other. As long as you keep it in the order it should be in!
Coloring eggs and getting ready for the rabbit on the first day of spring is one way our family has kept both and in the proper perspective.
The "Resurection Eggs" are another.
If you are looking for ideas to get you thinking about how you can weave the bunny and egg coloring into the focus of Jesus Christ's death and resurrection....and not the other way around....read some of these articles starting with "Finding Easter in Bunnies and Baskets". It might get you thinking about some ways to begin some new traditions in your home. Without feeling like you are giving anything up....just gaining more depth and truth.
Because it's fun to get ready for the Easter bunny to come.
But it is necessary to be ready for the promise of Christ's

Thanks for the great ideas, Robin. I looked up the websites for something different for Sunday School. It is hard sometimes keeping Jesus in the holiday that centers around a big rabbit and a bunch of candy in the public eye. The kids do really love to learn about the Lord, and it helps to have fun ways to do it. It always makes me feel sorry for the children that aren't exposed to the real meanings of the holidays. They are truely missing out.
I'm not sure....but I think I've even seen the Resurection Eggs in Walmart.
What ages do you teach in Sunday School?
I am kind of in charge of all of the Sunday School, pre-k thru 6th grade. We have multi age SS, due to lack of teachers. We have 3 week rotations of subjects and it has worked out pretty well. This way people only have to commit to 3 weeks instead of the whole year and the kids actually learn more about the stories, because we teach it in other ways besides just story form. We have had puppet shows, many crafts, games, cooking and movies. It can be a lot of fun!
